Mormoreto
The year 2020 ended with an autumn in which the rainfall of the period was sufficient to replenish the groundwater tables. Winter 2021 was instead characterised by moderate rainfall and mild temperatures. Spring was cool and dry initially, followed by a month of May with abundant rainfall that replenished the water reserves of the countryside. A scarcity of rainfall in summer favoured a balanced water stress of the vines and brought great richness of colour and aroma to the grapes. Beneficial rains, followed by abundant hill breezes, allowed the grapes to conclude their ripening cycle with extraordinary elegance and perfect health. The 2021 vintage was a rich one in which the spirit of the region emerged with great dynamism and vigour, allowing the production of wines that fully reflect the unique character of Nipozzano.
Vinification and ageing: The Mormoreto vineyard is located 300 metres above sea level, planted in sandy soils with a southwestern exposure. The grapes from the Mormoreto vineyard were harvested manually in 15 kg boxes. After the bunches are initially sorted in the vineyard, these were further selected upon their arrival in the cellar. This attention to detail always ensures the highest possible quality. The 2021 harvest yielded wonderfully ripe grapes with a beautifully acidic edge. Malolactic fermentation took place immediately after racking. At the end of the year, Mormoreto started its maturation/ageing in French oak barriques, where it was left for the next 18 months drawing maximum benefit from the natural micro-oxygenation provided by the oak. Several further months of ageing after bottling allowed the Mormoreto to blend, expressing its full elegance and potential.
Organoleptic Notes: To the eye, the 2021 Mormoreto is an intense and vibrant ruby-red colour with purple highlights. On the nose, it is complex, fruity, floral, spicy with empyreumatic notes. The fruity aspect is particularly articulated, mainly with forest fruits: raspberry, blackcurrant, blueberry and wild strawberry alongside hints of ripe cherry. These are followed by the spicy notes of pepper and cinnamon; hints of cocoa, tobacco and lightly toasted dried fruit. Black tea and coffee prevail in the olfactory finish. On the palate it is full-bodied, harmonious and very persistent. The tannic texture is pleasantly smooth and velvety. An extremely long finish and the aftertaste brings out all its intense character.
